About

Mid-Century Era

(1950 - 1965)
This post-war Era saw the rise of platinum once again as well as the rise of designer jewellery such as Tiffany & Co., Cartier and Van Cleef and Arpels. Post-war prosperity helped launch designers such as these into collectors’ pieces.

In a post war world, people looked toward fun and lighthearted motives such as animals, insects and flowers to keep peoples spirits up. The era was also a revival for centre stones in engagement rings, most popularly using the marquise cut with diamond.

Faux pearls and multi-strand necklaces were popular daytime wear as well as large button style earrings and wide yellow gold bracelets. Large abstract brooches were also the rage, often times worn in a group on one shoulder. This offered interest to everyday outfits as well as a polished professional office looks.

Space themes broke into the mainstream as we entered the “Atomic Age”. This inspired jewellery pieces such as brooches in the shape of spaceships and “Sputnik” rings were often seen with starbursts on the era’s most stylish.

At the same time a modernist movement began during this period. Independent studio artists set up shop producing avaunt-garde designs. These were handcrafted and in abstract forms made of silver and semi-precious stones. These pieces remain highly collectible today.
