About

Georgian Era

(1714-1837)
Named after the four kings reigning Great Britain, this era had an impact on society worldwide and made many exceptional changes in the art. Being an era of innovation and discovery helped pave the way in the world of jewellery, and evolved styles from primitive to sophisticated due to the discoveries of new gemstones.

The jewellery of this era was very feminine and elegant, using themes such as flowers and birds. Minimal jewellery was worn during the day. However in the evenings, rose cut and old mine cut diamonds would come out to sparkle in the candlelight. Set in long chandelier earrings and grand riviere necklaces, the pinned-up hairstyles of the time displayed them perfectly. Chatelaines were the most important accessory for a lady. This piece would allow her to carry the tools (thimbles, scissors, keys, watches, etc.) needed for her daily chores. Cameos, lace pins, and matching bracelets are just a few more pieces that were worn in this era.

Gemstones were often backed with coloured foil to intensify the colour of the stone and provide an extra layer of luminescence. Closed-back and foiled jewellery are other signature styles of the Georgian Era. Genuine pieces from the Georgian era are rare to come across, as during this era jewelers would often melt down pieces once they were out of fashion. They did this to reuse the metals, as materials were low in supply.

Carnelian – Chalcedony Variety

With shades varying from pale orange to an almost black, Carnelian gets its colour from impurities of iron oxide. This stone was used by ancient Romans to make signet rings, which were then used as a letter seal. A majority of carnelian comes from India, however it is also found in Brazil, Egypt and Uruguay. Carnelian ranks between 6.5-7 on the Mohs hardness scale.
